MTU Innovation Challenge
20 March, 2026
Innovation, collaboration, and real-world problem solving took centre stage at last week’s MTU Innovation Challenge, as students delivered solutions shaped by eight weeks of intensive teamwork.
The event brought together students from Munster Technological University, INGENIUM University, and partner institutions across Europe and Africa. Working in teams, participants tackled real challenges set by organisations including The Crann Centre, Cork University Hospital, Marymount University Hospital and Hospice, AmuGreen and MyGug, and Mulago National Referral Hospital in Uganda.
Each team combined skills from areas such as engineering, IT, cybersecurity, biosciences, art and design, and business. The goal was simple but demanding - to develop practical, scalable solutions that could work in real-world environments.
Among the standout teams was the Cork University Hospital challenge group, which included the Hincks Centre’s Judah Arun. The team developed an affordable and user-friendly tracking system supported by a mobile app to help locate, monitor, and manage hospital infusion devices. Their solution focused on improving efficiency in busy, clinical settings where time and equipment access are critical.

The team, led by Jakub Adamczyk, worked across disciplines to bring the concept to life, combining technical development with clear strategic thinking. Their work earned them one of the top awards of the event.

A second winning team focused on challenges faced by Mulago National Referral Hospital in Uganda. Their solution involved redesigning a biopsy needle to better suit environments with limited resources, while maintaining safety and precision.
Judges highlighted the high standard of both ideas and presentations, noting the level of thought, innovation, and practicality shown by all teams involved.
The event also reflected the importance of mentorship, with industry experts and academic staff supporting students throughout the process. Their guidance helped shape ideas into solutions that could have real impact beyond the classroom.
The MTU Innovation Challenge continues to highlight what can be achieved when students are given the opportunity to collaborate across disciplines and borders. It stands as a strong example of how education, innovation, and global cooperation can come together to address real-world problems.
