Kicking off the new academic year, Dr Helen McGuirk attended the Rural Development Research Symposium at University College Cork this week, as MTU representative on the government’s Our Rural Future higher education network.  T

Minister of State with responsibility for Community Development and Charities, Jerry Buttimer TD, opened the event, the first of its kind in twenty years.  In his opening remarks Mr Buttimer, said:

“Research and evidence are essential to good policymaking and the breadth of research presented at today’s event demonstrates the importance of Ireland’s whole-of-Government approach to rural development.”

The day-long event showcased some of the most impactful research related to Ireland’s vibrant rural, regional and remote areas.  Presentations explored a broad range of topics including economic development and enterprise, technological innovation, and tourism.  The symposium brought together established researchers from across the country to share their findings and engage in a number of panel discussions.

A highlight of the event was the poster exhibition featuring research by over thirty PhD students.  This exhibition and the breath of topics presented throughout the day contribute to the national discussion on the future and opportunities for those living and working in rural, remote, and regional areas.
